After
Joseph Stalin seized control of the Soviet Union he signed a non
aggression pact with Adolf Hitler to ensure that Russia could recover
from the revolutions Vladimir Lenin had led only a few years prior. This
pact was called the "Molotov-Ribbentrop" and it was formally signed on
August 23, 1939. In 1941 Adolf Hitler broke the pact he had signed with
the Soviet Union by sending troops to Russia's southern provinces, these
troops were stopped by Russian soldiers. Ignoring Hitler's apparent
declaration of war on the Soviet Union, Stalin began to communicate more
with allied troops in the hopes that America and their allies would be
able to stop the axis powers. Stalin, in an attempt to avoid direct
confrontation with Nazi troops, didn't send an offensive towards Germany, even after they had tried to breach Russia's border.
However, on August 23, 1942 Nazi soldiers attacked Stalingrad, a Russian
province named after Joseph Stalin himself. Feeling that this was an
insult to Stalin's power, Stalin led an army over 1,000,000 men strong
to fight off the Nazi attackers. Even with the Russian manpower the
Nazi's still had more artillery, however, the Russians had one
advantage: it was winter. Having not prepared properly for Russia's
cold winters the Nazi attackers were defeated.
After the Soviet Union successfully fended off the Nazis in the battle of Stalingrad, Stalin decided to side with the Allied powers. Stalin feared that Nazi troops would return to attack Russia's capital, Moscow, so he encircled the city with thousands of Russian troops. After he did this, Stalin reinforced the amount of troops he had protecting Russia's border to the west. He then attempted to create a western front that would be large enough to drive out any remaining Nazi soldiers. As a result of Russia's victory over Nazi Germany, Hitler began to loose the trust of the German people. Many began to retaliate against Adolf Hitler which eventually threatened the prosperity Hitler ensured was everlasting. Even the moral of Germany's troops began to decrease as they had realized that defeat was eminent.
Even after Stalin took control of Russia and formed the Soviet Union, their economy wasn't the greatest, in fact peasants would be an easy word to describe Russia because of how many people were poor and living in poverty. Stalin, then began a plan to transform the newly established Soviet Union into an industrial superpower, to do this he would have to create more jobs centered around the mass production of weapons, vehicles etc. After his attempt to industrialize Russia hadn't provided the results Stalin had hoped for Stalin he realized that he couldn't just have an economy solely centered on private industry so he forced poor citizens living in the Soviet Union to produce agricultural goods. In this way the economy soared from a peasant state to an economic superpower. Millions of farmers began to make money off of their goods, thus, creating more and more jobs for the Russian population. The Soviet Union was transformed into what Stalin believed was the most powerful country in the world.
